• Original Simon Road Hokkien Mee in Tampines

Finally! I’ve found a plate of fried prawn noodles (aka fried Hokkien mee) that’s worth the calories.

My all-time favourite is still Changi Village Fried Hokkien Mee, but I rarely get to eat it these days. Mainly because there isn’t an outlet anywhere near Tampines, and whenever I do spot one at a hawker centre elsewhere, it’s somehow already closed for the day (why always like that??).

So when I saw an IG post announcing that Original Simon Road Hokkien Mee had opened an outlet in Tampines, I knew I had to check it out. I honestly can’t believe I’ve never tried this brand before, even though they already have an outlet in Bedok. (I even went Bedok just to try Shiok Hokkien Mee previously because of LW… but I digress!)

One visit later, boom! This has officially climbed to my #2 favourite fried Hokkien mee spot.

    What They Offer

The menu is simple and focused, which I always appreciate. There are just three items:

    • Fried Hokkien Mee
    • Fried Oyster
    • Fried Carrot Cake (White)

This round, we ordered the fried Hokkien mee for ourselves and also a fried carrot cake to share.

Bonus for seniors: if you’re a Merdeka card holder, there’s a $1 discount. I’m not entirely sure if there’s a minimum spend though! The stall owner noticed my dad’s Merdeka card and kindly offered the discount on the spot.

    What We Think

The fried carrot cake leaned slightly on the salty side, but it came with a generous amount of chye poh, which I personally enjoyed. Every bite had that savoury crunch.

    fried carrot cake

The real star, though, was the fried Hokkien mee. I’m a big fan of FHM that uses yellow noodles mixed with thin beehoon, so this was right up my alley. The broth was flavourful without being too heavy, and the ingredients were surprisingly generous.

original simon road fried hokkien mee
All the ingredients are buried under the noodles!!!

I ordered the smallest plate ($6) and still got three prawns, plus pork belly and sotong slices. They also serve two types of chilli, which is a huge win if you like customising your spice level.

    Final Word

If you’re a Tampines resident who loves a good plate of fried Hokkien mee, Original Simon Road Hokkien Mee is well worth checking out. It’s comforting, flavourful, and generous, the kind of stall you’ll be happy to revisit when cravings hit. With solid execution and the convenience of having it right here in Tampines, this one has definitely earned a spot on my personal favourites list.

    Location

📍 Original Simon Road Hokkien Mee (Tampines outlet)
    Address: Blk 820 Tampines Street 81, #01-506, Singapore 520820
It’s located in the coffeeshop opposite the Tampines West CC clock tower.

  • Home Based Businesses (HBBs) in Tampines North

Tampines North has quickly grown into one of the most vibrant new clusters in Tampines, thanks to its lively community and the many BTO neighbourhoods that now fill the area. Alongside the parks, new amenities and family friendly spaces, a different kind of local culture has also taken root. Home based businesses are flourishing here, especially cafés, bakers and beverage crafters who bring creativity, passion and small batch quality right to the doorstep of residents.

This article highlights the growing lineup of HBBs in Tampines North, each one offering its own signature flavours, handcrafted treats and personal touch. From specialty coffee to artisanal bakes and thoughtfully crafted drinks, these home grown brands add warmth and character to the neighbourhood and show how much talent lives within our own blocks.

    Baobei Coffee

Baobei Coffee (Bao杯 Coffee) brings a cosy, homely charm to the neighbourhood, thanks in part to its friendly resident corgi, Scottie, who greets customers like an old friend.

The highlight here is Bed of Roses, an iced rose latte that blends fragrant floral notes with smooth, locally roasted coffee for a gentle, comforting flavour.

Rather than relying on elaborate menus, Baobei Coffee shines through its warmth and personality. The combination of thoughtful brews, a relaxed atmosphere and Scottie’s cheerful presence creates an experience that feels less like visiting a café and more like dropping by a friend’s home for a comforting treat.

    Cha Buey Zao

Cha Buey Zao brings a gentle, calming touch to the neighbourhood with drinks rooted in traditional Japanese tea culture.

Its matcha latte is the highlight, smooth and full of natural umami without feeling heavy or overly sweet.

The brand prides itself on brewing with real tea leaves, allowing each cup to carry the purity and nuance of the ingredients. Instead of chasing bold flavours, Cha Buey Zao focuses on subtlety and balance, offering a quietly refined experience for anyone who enjoys a thoughtful, well made tea.

    Craft Brew Coffee

Craft Brew Coffee takes a simple, stripped-back approach to brewing, focusing on clean flavours and well executed cups.

Its standout drink, the Iced Coconut Latte, blends a double espresso with smooth coconut milk for a refreshing, lightly sweet finish.

The charm of this HBB lies in its calm, minimalist style. Drawing inspiration from small Taiwanese filter bars, it keeps the menu tight and intentional, letting the quality of the coffee speak for itself without added frills.

    Fin Coffee Co.

Fin Coffee Co. brings a relaxed, Antipodean spirit to its home café setup, offering thoughtfully brewed coffee that feels both comforting and refined.

Its signature hand-drip filter brew, often made with beans roasted by the owner, delivers a clean and nuanced cup that highlights the natural character of the coffee.

Rather than leaning on bold flavours or experimental add-ons, Fin Coffee Co. shines through its calm, unpretentious approach. Every brew reflects a focus on craftsmanship and the simple pleasure of sharing good coffee, making it a favourite for those who appreciate quiet quality over theatrics.

    Hamamachi coffee

Hamamachi Coffee began as a simple neighbourhood hobby and has grown into a cosy home café known for honest brewing and warm community spirit.

Its standout drink, the Nutty White, blends espresso and milk with a gentle hazelnut note for an easy, comforting cup.

What truly sets Hamamachi Coffee apart is its ethos. The owner started brewing to give nearby residents a quality coffee option close to home, keeping prices accessible and the experience personal. It remains a passion-driven space where good coffee and genuine neighbourliness come before business goals.

    Keopi Madre

Keopi Madre offers a small but creative home based café experience built around specialty brews, sustainability and a warm personal style.

Its signature drink, the Smoked Caramel Nitro, layers nitrogen infused cold brew with a smoky caramel cold foam for a smooth and deeply aromatic profile.

The brand is also known for its eco conscious approach, serving drinks in refillable pouches to cut down on waste. Beyond its nitro selections, Keopi Madre experiments with flavour driven beverages such as its Lavender Brûlée Matcha, reflecting a menu that feels inventive without losing the comfort of familiar café favourites.

    Made.By.LineSg

Made.By.LineSg is a cosy home bakery café known for its refined French style and thoughtful attention to detail.

While its beautifully crafted macarons take the spotlight with their smooth shells and balanced flavours, the menu extends to comforting buttercakes, warm apple crumble tarts and festive pineapple balls.

Everything is prepared in small batches, giving each bake a handmade charm that sets it apart from typical commercial offerings. Seasonal creations such as the Earl Grey pineapple ball show a playful creativity, making this home based bakery a delightful stop for anyone who appreciates elegant yet approachable treats.

    Madebykirinboi Home Cafe

Madebykirinboi Home Café runs in an intimate, invite only format where opening hours are never fully predictable. Sometimes a quick message gets you in, and sometimes it does not, which adds to its charm.

Instead of a fixed menu, the experience leans into discovery. Each visit feels curated, shaped by the host’s mood, creativity and ongoing experiments. The small gatherings, tasting sessions and collaborative cuppings reveal a deep respect for craft coffee and a desire to share it in a relaxed, personal setting rather than a traditional walk-in café environment.

    Momo Matcha

Momo Matcha brings a thoughtful, elevated touch to matcha making. Working with ceremonial grade Japanese matcha, this home based café specialises in drinks that highlight depth, clarity and balance.

A favourite among regulars is the Earl Grey Matcha Cloud, where gentle bergamot notes meet a soft layer of matcha cream. Each cup is prepared in small batches to preserve freshness and showcase the naturally smooth character of the matcha.

Alongside its core offerings, Momo Matcha occasionally releases seasonal creations such as Strawberry Matcha, adding refreshing flavours while keeping the focus firmly on clean, high quality matcha.

    Moonetic Bakes

Moonetic Bakes is a cosy home bakery known for bakes that feel heartfelt and genuinely homemade.

Its famous Blackout Brownie has earned loyal fans for its deep chocolate flavour and irresistibly fudgy texture.

The menu changes across small batch bakes, giving customers something comforting each time they order. You might find fluffy Japanese milk bread, fragrant Earl Grey cookies that crumble softly, or a well loved banana cake that tastes like it came straight from a family kitchen. Every item reflects the baker’s care and commitment to simple ingredients and honest flavours.

    Oh My Teh! By Hannah

Oh My Teh By Hannah brings a warm and personal touch to classic milk tea, offering brews that emphasise depth, aroma and authenticity.

Its standout creation is a rich spiced milk tea made with premium tea leaves sourced from Pakistan, resulting in a bold yet soothing flavour profile.

Rather than using shortcuts or instant mixes, every cup is brewed from real tea leaves, giving the drinks a natural complexity and fragrance. The result is a homestyle milk tea experience that feels thoughtfully crafted, comforting and pleasantly refined.

    Spilled Roaster & Brews

Spilled Roaster & Brews stands out as the most talked-about home based café in Tampines, and for good reason. Delun runs it as both a micro roastery and a cosy neighbourhood coffee spot, roasting small batches each week and exploring a variety of origins.

Its filter coffee is the highlight, brewed with mineral-infused water to bring out clear, expressive flavours that lean floral or fruit forward.

Prices remain remarkably friendly, with espresso from three dollars and pour overs from five. The warmth of the space and the strong sense of community make every visit feel personal and genuine.

    Squiche.sg

Squiche.sg brings a charming French touch to Tampines North with its refined tarts, quiches, and small batch bakes.

Its well loved four inch spinach mushroom quiche balances a tender, buttery crust with a creamy filling layered with vegetables and ham, creating a satisfying savoury treat.

The menu goes far beyond the classic flavours too. You will find bite sized quichelets perfect for snacking, rotating seasonal combinations, and indulgent sweets such as pecan nut bars and pineapple balls.

Each bake feels homely yet polished, showcasing the kind of care and finesse that make this HBB quietly exceptional.

    Tan Tan Coffee

Tan Tan Coffee is a home-based concept led by an SG Barista Champion who brings professional level precision to every cup. Instead of sticking strictly to competition style brews, the menu leans into fun, imaginative creations.

A favourite among regulars is the Espresso Cloud, where a double shot meets a light cream layer and a splash of coconut water for a clean lift and gentle sweetness. The result is a drink that feels both refined and playful.

Tan Tan Coffee stands out for blending expert technique with a willingness to explore flavours in unexpected, memorable ways.

    The Cocoa Spatula

The Cocoa Spatula is a boutique home-based bakery celebrated for its artisanal customised cakes and quality bakes, crafted with a strong design identity and meticulous attention to detail.

Its signature offerings are its custom artisan cakes, which are fully handcrafted and tailored to each occasion. What truly sets The Cocoa Spatula apart is its impressive mastery of visual themes, creating cakes that feel like edible art. Some of its standout themes include Classic Vintage, Roman Pillars, and Enchanted Garden, with each showing a distinct style, texture, and mood.

Where many home bakers focus on standard designs, The Cocoa Spatula excels in highly conceptual, aesthetically polished cakes that combine craftsmanship with elegance, making every creation uniquely memorable.

    Final Word

As we wrap up the final month of the year, it is clear that Tampines continues to thrive with energy, community spirit and plenty of meaningful ways to spend time together. With celebrations, activities and learning opportunities happening all around us, there is no shortage of moments to enjoy before we welcome a brand new year.

Whether you joined a workshop, took part in a wellness activity or simply soaked in the festive mood, we hope this month brings you warmth, connection and good memories. Here is to an amazing end to 2025 and an even brighter year ahead for all of us in Tampines.

  • Maxim Tam Chiak Kopitiam Opens at Tampines Blk 666

Tampines residents, rejoice! A new addition has landed in our neighbourhood as the much-talked-about Tam Chiak Kopitiam has officially opened its latest outlet at Blk 666 Tampines Street 64, #01-01, Singapore 520666.

After its popular Hougang branch made waves for its nostalgic kopitiam vibes, this Tampines outlet brings the same charm to the East, but within a smaller setting.

    A New Kopitiam in Tampines

Located below the Tampines GreenCrest BTO, Maxim Tam Chiak Kopitiam is a ten-stall coffeeshop concept that blends traditional hawker favourites with modern local flavours. The Tampines outlet is now almost fully operational, with most stalls already open and serving.

    Stalls and Highlights

    Chao Yuan Noodle
    Ipoh Tuck Kee

Here’s a look at the stalls in the kopitiam:

    • Boolatzkitchenz serves Malay and Indonesian comfort food such as nasi ambeng, gado-gado, and bubur kampung.
    • Famous HK Style Charcoal Roasted Delight offers roasted pork, char siew, and wanton noodles.
    • Deli Delight Hainan Western provides fusion western fare including Hainan pork chop and lemon butter fish.
    • 666 Cai Fan serves affordable mixed-rice options starting around S$3.70.
    • Vege Bear offers vegetarian yong tau foo and other greens-friendly dishes.
    • Chao Yuan Noodle features comforting noodle dishes with a flavourful broth base.
    • Ipoh Tuck Kee is known for silky smooth hor fun and wok hei infused noodles.
    • Mohamed Waseef Indian Muslim Food serves familiar Indian Muslim favourites such as prata, biryani, and maggi goreng.
    • Tao Jie specialises in a wide range of regional Chinese dishes including Sichuan and Hunan cuisine, Dongbei-style barbecue, and Chongqing grilled fish.
    • Yeo Yeo Huat Drinks and Toast is the go-to for kopi, teh, and traditional kaya toast breakfasts.

    My Visit: Small but Buzzing

I visited after lunch hours (around 2pm), and here’s my honest impression.

What we ordered: XO War Tan Hor & Cai Poh Dried Hor Fun (from Ipoh Tuck Kee) and Curry Fish Head (from Mohamed Waseef Indian Muslim Food).

XO War Tan Hor & Cai Poh Dried Hor Fun (from Ipoh Tuck Kee)
    curry fish head

Almost all stalls were already open, which is great news for those eager to explore the full variety. The space, however, is smaller than expected, especially when compared to the Hougang outlet. Seating is tighter and the air felt quite warm and stuffy, even during the off-peak period.

Because of the compact layout, sound tends to echo, making the environment noisy. The chatter and clatter bounce off the walls and are noticeable even when the shop is only half full.

Despite these points, the kopitiam still has a lively neighbourhood charm, and it is exciting to see this brand expanding into the East.

    kopitiam interior

On my second visit, we dropped by a little later than the usual dinner crowd (after 8pm). Unfortunately, all the steamed fish were already sold out by then. We ended up choosing Tao Jie Chinese Food instead, and it turned out to be a great decision. Portions were generous, and the dishes were tasty and satisfying. Definitely a solid option if you’re craving comforting Chinese food.

    Final Thoughts

For those living in Tampines, the new Tam Chiak Kopitiam is a welcome addition to the local food scene. Once the ventilation improves and all stalls find their rhythm, it will be an even better spot for casual meals.

Probably visit during cooler hours in the morning or after 6pm for a more comfortable experience. And I’ll definitely be back to try other food options from Ipoh Tuck Kee (which I did)!

  • Tampines’ Most Instagrammable Spots: A Resident’s Guide to the Iconic HDB Murals

As a long-time Tampines resident, I’ve watched our town transform into a truly vibrant and colourful neighbourhood. Forget generic grey concrete! Tampines is now home to some of Singapore’s most eye-catching HDB art, designed to spark joy and a little bit of nostalgia!

Whether you’re a fellow resident or an art-loving visitor looking for the perfect photo-op, these iconic block designs are a must-see. Grab your camera and prepare for a nostalgic journey through the art clusters of Tampines.

    The Iconic Retro Classics

This collection is a huge hit, turning everyday HDB blocks into giant, colourful pieces of retro technology. It truly brings a unique flavour to our public housing landscape!

    Location: Blocks 401 to 423

Pro-Tip: The Retro TV Test Pattern blocks along Street 41 are arguably the most famous. Head near Block 401 or 423 on a sunny day for the best photos that really make the colours pop.

Fun and Games: The Aeroplane Chess Cluster

One of the more recent and dynamic repainting projects is themed around the universally loved childhood board game, Aeroplane Chess (or Ludo).

    Ludo HDB

Location: Blocks 472 to 484 (N4 Neighbourhood Centre)

This vibrant, graphic design uses the bold colours of the game (red, blue, yellow, green) across the gable end walls, transforming the skyline near the N4 Neighbourhood Centre. While a few residents initially gave feedback on the bright colours shining into their homes (in a bad way), the overall design was selected by a majority vote and has successfully injected a playful energy into the area.

Hidden Art: Murals in the N4 Neighbourhood Centre

Beyond the large-scale block repaints, the N4 Neighbourhood Centre on Tampines Street 44 is also home to charming void deck and wall murals that reflect our local heritage and community spirit.

The most iconic one is a fascinating heritage wall mural by resident Francis Theo. It depicts a nostalgic mama shop (provision store), complete with painted-on Ovaltine cans and old Coke glasses. This is a wonderful spot for a photo where you can “sit” right outside the old shop.

There are also large-scale wall murals commissioned by the Town Council celebrating Singapore’s diverse festivals. These murals often feature vibrant, interactive scenes for Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali, and Christmas, sometimes with 3D props like benches and bamboo oil lamps (pelita).

    Final Thoughts

Tampines is more than just another HDB town; it’s a canvas that celebrates our shared memories, cultural identity, and vibrant community. Next time you’re exploring the area, take a moment to look up, and you might just find your new favourite photo spot!

  • Huong Pho: Taste of Vietnam in Tampines

Since the closure of our last good bánh mì spot in Tampines West, I’ve been on a mission to find a replacement that’s just as tasty. My search ended when Huong Pho, the popular Vietnamese eatery from Ubi, opened its new outlet right here in Tampines Central. I’m thrilled we finally have a genuine Vietnamese taste close to home, meaning we no longer have to travel far for a truly authentic bowl of pho and a fantastic bánh mì.

Why Huong Pho is A Must-Try

For those who haven’t tried it yet, Huong Pho specialises in the kind of honest, home-cooked Vietnamese food that’s hard to find outside of Vietnam. It’s not your typical mass-market Vietnamese chain; the focus here is on quality ingredients and a rich, time-intensive broth that’s the true soul of any great pho.

Must Order: The Pho (Noodle Soup)

    Beef pho

The legendary Beef Pho (Phở Tái) is the main reason for the queues at their original outlet, and it’s just as good at the new Tampines spot.

    • The Broth: This is what separates Huong Pho from the rest. The beef broth is simmered for hours, giving it a clear yet deeply flavourful profile. It’s comforting, aromatic, and not overly oily or salty.
    • The Beef: The thinly sliced beef is tender and plentiful.

Often overlooked, their Chicken Pho (Phở Gà) is a masterpiece in its own right. The broth, simmered with kampong chicken, is clear, light, and wonderfully sweet, paired with tender, juicy slices of chicken. It’s the perfect comfort food for a cooler evening.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to squeeze in the lime and add a bit of the fresh chilli for that perfect acidic kick!

Beyond the Pho: Other Must-Try Items

    Huong Pho bahn mi making

While the pho is essential, Huong Pho’s menu offers many other highlights you cannot miss.

If you crave a sandwich, the Bánh Mì Xíu Mai is a standout, featuring juicy Vietnamese pork meatballs topped with a salty sweet salted egg yolk, a truly unique and delicious take.

Bánh Mì Cá (Sardine bahn mi)

For something a little different, try the Bánh Mì Cá, a surprisingly good baguette filled with fresh sardine that has been steamed for hours until tender and infused with flavour.

Finally, no visit is complete without an order of their Chả Giò (Vietnamese Fried Spring Rolls). They are always freshly fried, shatteringly crispy, and the savoury filling pairs perfectly with the tangy dipping sauce.

    Huong Pho Tampines Outlet Location

The Huong Pho Tampines outlet is conveniently located in Wellness Village, found in the basement of the Tampines MRT station (Downtown Line). This spot makes it an incredibly easy and great stop whether you’re commuting, working, or shopping in the area.

    Wellness Village Tampines MRT

Address: 15 Tampines Central 1, B1-15, Tampines MRT Station, Singapore 529544

TL;DR: if you’re looking for the best, most authentic Vietnamese Pho and Banh Mi in the East side of Singapore, Huong Pho in Tampines is your new go-to place. Welcome to the neighbourhood!
